Exploration of Language
Lottie Mac (b. 1998)

Lottie Mac is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice investigates the fluidity and complexity of language, exploring its ability to articulate, obscure, and connect. Deeply rooted in the socio-political evolution of the Irish language, her work examines the intersections of cultural identity, memory, and heritage.

Mac’s practice spans tufting, painting, sculpture, metalwork, and carpentry, with an emphasis on materiality and physical engagement. Her works are imbued with a sense of rhythm and movement, informed by her response to emotions, music, and environment. Jazz music, with its improvisational and emotive qualities, serves as a significant influence, particularly in her expressive painting series, which translates its dynamism into visual form. The physical act of making is central to her process, underscoring the connection between action, thought, and creation.

An essential aspect of Mac’s practice is the space it creates for reflection, both for herself and her audience. Her works encourage moments of contemplation, inviting viewers to consider how language and its transformations shape our collective histories and emotional landscapes. While navigating the grief and complexity of cultural loss, Mac’s work remains rooted in gratitude—an acknowledgment of the resilience and richness of Ireland’s linguistic and cultural heritage. This sense of gratitude informs her approach, celebrating the enduring connections between past and present, language and identity.

Mac’s art offers a meditative exploration of language as both a personal and collective experience. By abstracting words and forms, she constructs visual poems that honor the intricacies of communication and invite deeper engagement with the cultural narratives that define us.
